Private Robert Henry Gault

 

The background of this North Irish Horseman is not known at present. He may have been the Robert Henry Gault born on 8 March 1899 in Broughton Street, Dundalk, County Louth, the first of seven children of accountant (later described as commercial clerk in the coal trade) Robert Gault and his wife Sarah (née Gilbert). At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at 10 Wellington Place, Dundalk, with his parents and siblings.

Gault enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 18 and 27 April 1917 (No.2426 or 2427 – later Corps of Hussars No.71819).

He trained at the regiment's Antrim reserve camp before embarking for France in 1917 or 1918. There he was posted to one of the squadrons of the 1st North Irish Horse Regiment. This regiment served as corps cavalry to VII, XIX, then V Corps from its establishment in May 1916 until February-March 1918, when it was dismounted and converted to a cyclist unit, serving as corps cyclists to V Corps until the end of the war.

On 17 October 1919 Gault was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
